Greek Easter Traditions and Recipes

Greek Orthodox Easter (Πάσχα, Pascha) is the most significant religious celebration in Greece and Cyprus. It’s deeply spiritual but also rich in cultural traditions, foods, and customs that bring families and communities together. Here’s a breakdown of what it typically includes:

Holy Week Traditions

Each day of Holy Week leading up to Easter Sunday has special church services and symbolism.

  • Holy Thursday: People dye eggs red (symbolizing Christ’s blood) and start preparing traditional Easter foods like tsoureki (a sweet braided bread).
  • Good Friday: It’s a day of mourning. People decorate the epitaphios (a symbolic tomb of Christ) with flowers and join evening processions in near-silence, often holding candles.
  • Holy Saturday Night: The Resurrection Service is the most anticipated. At midnight, the priest announces Christos Anesti! (“Christ is Risen!”) and people reply with Alithos Anesti! (“Truly He is Risen!”) while lighting candles from the Holy Flame and setting off fireworks.

Traditional Easter Foods

Food is a huge part of Easter in both Greece and Cyprus — especially after the strict fasting of Lent. Here’s what you’ll find:

Greece:

  • Magiritsa: A traditional Easter soup made from lamb offal and greens, eaten right after the midnight service.
  • Ovelias: Lamb or Goat on the Spit: The centerpiece of Easter Sunday, slow-roasted outdoors, often seasoned with lemon, garlic, and oregano.
  • Tsoureki: Sweet, fluffy bread braided and often decorated with red eggs.
  • Koulourakia: Easter butter cookies with a hint of orange or vanilla.
  • Red-Dyed Eggs: Used in a game called tsougrisma — two people crack eggs against each other and whoever’s egg doesn’t break is said to have good luck.

Cyprus:

  • Flaounes: Savory Easter pastries made with a special cheese (like halloumi or paskia), raisins, and sometimes mint. They’re baked on Holy Saturday and eaten cold or warm.
  • Avgolemono Soup or Traditional Cyprus Magiritsa: Variations may differ slightly from mainland Greece but serve the same purpose after the midnight service.
  • Souvla: Similar to the lamb on a spit, but often larger chunks and sometimes with pork, cooked slowly over charcoal.
  • Kleftiko: Lamb baked in parchment paper.

Who celebrate their Name Days during the Easter holidays

On Easter day a lot of people celebrate their name days:  Lambros – Lambrini, Anastasios – Anastasia, Tasoula, Tasia, Paschalis – Paschalia, Anestis or whatever their pet names may be.

Depending on what date the Easter day falls, it may also coincide with other name days.

George, Georgia and Zoe will also be celebrating after Easter.

This happens whenever Easter is after the 23rd April, (the celebration of the feast of St. George),  the name day is moved to the first Monday after Easter or, as it is sometimes called, to the Monday of Bright Week.

The feast of Zoodochou Pigis (Life-giving Source) is usually celebrated on the first Friday after Easter.

Happy Name day to you all!

For this reason, in the list below I have included some traditional desserts as well as some cakes.

Here are also some ideas how to use your leftovers, as we do not let anything go to waste!!

With leftover eggs, you can use them and make a Spring Egg salad or Deviled eggs.

If you have leftover Tsoureki, you can make a Pudding with Tsoureki or Ekmek with Tsoureki.
